On average, people speak 16,000 words a day.
And yet, many of those words are forgotten just as quickly as they are spoken.
Which is a shame, because you never know which small word, kind gesture, or positive piece of encouragement will make a lasting impact and change the world.
If you want proof, just look at Yardnique…
On September 5th, 2025, NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) celebrated its annual CALS Alumni Awards. This year, Yardnique’s Founder and CEO, Brian DuMont, received an Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of his achievements in the field of landscaping.
Humbled and honored, Brian stated the occasion was “truly a full circle moment,” because what started as a mock company created for an NC State class project has now blossomed into one of the Southeast’s fastest growing landscaping companies.
But Brian attributes the moment his professor, Dr. Stu Warren, returned his assignment as a key moment in Yardnique’s history.
When the assignments were returned, Brian was surprised to receive not only the highest grade he’d ever achieved at NC State, but also two words of feedback…
“Great name.”
Nearly 30 years later, Yardnique has evolved from a class project to a name featured as #23 on Lawn & Landscape’s Top 100 Landscaping Companies and #23 on Landscaping Management’s 2025 LM150. It has also grown from a team of five handing out flyers, to a FAMILY of 2,500 featured in articles and magazines nationwide.
Most notably, Yardnique has created innovative, customer-centric software like Syncscape, elevating the standard of excellence and customer service in the landscaping industry.
These achievements in landscaping brought Brian back to his roots, NC State, to accept his CALS Outstanding Alumni Award.
However, Brian has never forgotten the two words that started it all. While receiving his award, amidst thanking loved ones, team members, and shouting out his daughter for her 25th birthday, Brian took a moment to recognize Dr. Stu Warren for his words of encouragement, “Great name.”
The smallest seeds can sprout the tallest trees, and Yardnique knows a thing or two about the importance of planting healthy seeds.
